How InboxExport handles your data and anonymises customers

Your conversations stay on your computer

When you click Export, the extension asks Shopify Inbox for your conversations using your existing sign-in, the same way the Inbox page does, and builds the files in your browser. They go straight to your Downloads folder. We never receive your conversations or your customers’ details.

What does leave your browser

  • Your license key, if you have one, is sent to Lemon Squeezy, our reseller, to check which plan it belongs to.
  • That’s all. There’s no tracking or analytics in the extension.

Read-only

InboxExport doesn’t send messages, close conversations, change tags or mark chats as read.

How anonymising works

Anonymising applies on the Free plan, and on paid plans whenever “Hide customer details” is ticked (the default). With it unticked on a paid plan, messages are exported exactly as written.

  • Each customer gets a label, “Customer 1”, “Customer 2” and so on. The same customer keeps the same label across conversations in one export.
  • The customer’s name is replaced inside messages too, so “Hi, it’s Maria” becomes “Hi, it’s Customer 1”.
  • Email addresses become [email] and phone numbers become [phone].
  • Staff names stay, so you can see who answered.

On Business you can also show some details and hide others, for example names but no email or phone. A detail you switch off is removed from the message text as well.

Anonymising works on names and contact details. If a customer wrote other personal details, such as a street address, they stay in the message text, so check before sharing a file widely.

Your responsibilities

When you export customer names or emails, you’re handling your customers’ personal data. Keep the files secure, share them only with people who need them, and delete them when you no longer need them. Our privacy policy has the full details.
