How to export Shopify Inbox chats to CSV

Shopify Inbox doesn’t have an export feature. You can read conversations in Inbox, but there’s no button to download them, and Shopify doesn’t offer an Inbox export through its API either. InboxExport is a Chrome extension that adds the missing button.

Before you start

  • Google Chrome (or another Chrome-based browser such as Edge or Brave) on a computer.
  • A Shopify staff account that can open Shopify Inbox.
  • The InboxExport extension. Install it here; it takes a minute.

Export your chats

  1. Open Shopify Inbox. In your Shopify admin, click Inbox under Sales channels. Inbox opens in its own tab at inbox.shopify.com.
  2. Click the InboxExport icon in your Chrome toolbar. If you don’t see it, click the puzzle-piece icon and pin InboxExport.
  3. Choose a date range. The free plan covers the last 10 days; Starter, Pro and Pro+ go back 30, 60 and 90 days. On Business, pick any start and end date, as far back as your Inbox goes.
  4. Choose your options.
    • Files to download: tick the spreadsheet (CSV), readable transcripts (TXT), structured data (JSON), or any mix.
    • Spreadsheet rows: one row per conversation (the default) or one row per message. Shown only when the CSV is ticked.
    • Include open conversations: keep it ticked to export everything.
    • Include conversations handled automatically (Pro, Pro+ and Business): untick it to leave out chats the bot answered and closed on its own.
    • Hide customer details: ticked by default; replaces names with “Customer 1, 2…”. On Business, untick it and choose exactly which details to include.
  5. Click Export conversations. A small panel on the Inbox page shows progress. You can close the extension window; the export keeps going.
  6. Open your download from your Downloads folder. One file ticked arrives on its own, such as a .csv; two or more come in one zip. A very large export arrives in parts, …-part-1, …-part-2, and each file inside is numbered too.

A few hundred conversations take seconds. Several thousand take a minute or two, because InboxExport reads them at a gentle pace so Shopify doesn’t slow you down.

Open the CSV in Excel or Google Sheets

  • Excel: double-click conversations.csv. Accents and emoji display correctly.
  • Google Sheets: File → Import → Upload, then choose the CSV.
  • Numbers: drag the file onto the Numbers icon.

By default each row is one conversation, with the whole chat in one cell. See what’s in the export for every column.
